From Shelburne Bay through the first locks of the Champlain Canal (aka our first attempt to put pics in the blog)

Mallory shot lots of photos as she helped us get on our way, motor down Lake Champlain, work our way through the Champlain Canal with its 12 locks, and arrive at Hoponose.  Here is a sampling from the first week:

Hard work with Belinda getting electronic system updates completed just before departure (Shelburne Shipyard July 12),
Rosa with her mast loaded on wooden crutches, with jumble
of sails, clothing, food...   at Shelburne
Shipyard the day of departure.

Barbara and Ted at dinner the first night
Ted and Barbara collaborating, but not looking
too confident without GPS

Paula and Russ Tracy arrive on Tekke with friendship,
 canal experience, and GPS
Looking ahead to lock doors

Ted managing the bow in a lock
Mallory has her technique down on the stern in the locks
Long view of the dug portion of the Champlain Canal.
30 feet wide and 12 feet deep from side to side, in most places!

Young osprey with punk hairdo!

Ted trying to get cell service to
coordinate GPS repair

Some lock gates leaked!

The Hudson River widens beautifully,
but clearly these bridges won't allow Rosa mast clearance.
This Tug shows us how it's done on the river---and we
look forward to letting our ugly duckling transform back into a swan!

Our first week on Rosa dos Ventos

Calm is slowly replacing the chaos of retiring, moving from our home of the last 12 years, and packing our lives onto our Brewer 44. We have motored down Lake Champlain, passed through the 12 locks to the Hudson, and early this morning sailed under the George Washington Bridge and into the 79th street yacht basin to visit my sister Drayton. Tomorrow we round the tip of Manhattan and head down Long Island Sound toward Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. Wifi will help lots in that we'll be able to add photos. We're glad to be on our way!
